BD Hosts Inaugural Vascular Access Management (VAM) Summit in Cairo; Reinforcing Commitment to Advancing Patient Safety and Healthcare Worker Well‑Being Across the META Region
Event brought together regional healthcare leaders to address system-wide challenges and shape the future of vascular access excellence
Cairo, Egypt, February 8, 2026 – BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, successfully concluded its first-ever Vascular Access Management (VAM) Summit in Cairo. The landmark gathering brought together senior healthcare leaders, clinicians, and experts from across the Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META) to address some of the region’s most pressing healthcare challenges and to advance best practices in vascular access, a critical component of safe, effective patient care.
Vascular access is a cornerstone of modern medical care. Nearly 90% of hospitalized patients require an IV catheter to deliver medications and fluids, yet up to half of these devices fail before completing therapy. The inaugural summit forms part of BD’s commitment to advancing the standard of care for IV therapy for patients and partnering with healthcare facilities to identify and address gaps in the vascular access process through comprehensive clinical assessments, evidence-based recommendations and robust training programs.
As healthcare systems across the META region continue to navigate workforce shortages, rising burnout, variability in clinical practice, and increasing operational pressures, BD convened this forum to foster dialogue, share evidence-based insights, and highlight practical solutions that can drive sustainable improvements in care delivery.
Nazih Darwish, President – META Region at BD, emphasized the strategic importance of the summit, stating: “The inaugural VAM Summit demonstrates BD’s commitment to advancing patient safety and supporting the healthcare workforce across the META region. By bringing together experts to address shared challenges, and fostering knowledge exchange, we are helping build stronger, more resilient healthcare systems that deliver better outcomes for patients and clinicians alike.”
Over the two days of the summit, participants explored how optimized vascular access management – from device selection and infection prevention to ultrasound‑guided insertion and multidisciplinary Vascular Access Specialist Teams (VASTs) – can help reduce complications, streamline workflows, and support clinicians in high‑demand environments. These discussions underscored the essential role of vascular access in improving patient outcomes and protecting healthcare workers from avoidable risks.
Maher Elhassan, Vice President and General Manager – META Region at BD, added: “The VAM Summit represents a significant step forward in our mission to advance vascular access practices across the region. By sharing evidence-based strategies and practical insights, we empower clinicians with the knowledge, tools, and best practices needed to deliver safer, more effective care across the industry.”
The summit also highlighted how BD’s innovations in vascular access and medication delivery systems contribute to safer workflows, reduced complications, and improved outcomes for both patients and clinicians.
Reflecting on the importance of the event Dr. Walid Mubarak MBBCh, ABDR, DipHCM – Pediatric & Adult Interventional Radiology Attending and Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program Director at Sidra Medicine in Qatar said, “The VAM Summit provides an essential forum for advancing evidence‑based vascular access practice across the region. By focusing on standardized insertion techniques, device selection algorithms, and complication‑reduction strategies, we are strengthening clinical competency at every level of care. Multidisciplinary collaboration, anchored in current guidelines and emerging clinical data – is critical to reducing bloodstream infections, improving catheter dwell times, and optimizing patient outcomes. This is also a core part of Sidra Medicine’s interventional radiology strategy. The Summit is an opportunity for us share our best‑practice knowledge and methodologies and how they can be translated into consistent bedside practices, which ultimately elevates the quality and safety of vascular access delivery for all patients.”
By convening the region’s foremost experts and decision‑makers, BD’s inaugural VAM Summit has set the foundation for ongoing collaboration and continuous improvement in vascular access management. The event reinforces BD’s commitment to supporting hospitals, clinicians, and health systems as they work to overcome current and future challenges, elevate standards of care, strengthen workforce resilience and increase patient satisfaction.
